As we mentioned a week or so back we are compiling a new remix release featuring remixes of both BDO albums by New York City based remixers, dj’s and producers. The release is curated by New York based songwriter, producer, dj and artist extraordinaire Tony Grund. The project will features a host of up-and-coming underground remixers, dj’s, artists and producers as well as a few key names on the New York club scene. Those included on the album will be announced shortly. Accompanying the remix will be animations, short films and video. We’ll be putting our favourites into various film festivals around the world and adding the rest to our YouTube Channel.

We are featuring one remix by someone from anywhere around the globe - And we are holding a competition to chose the winner – Guys 'n' Gals This could be you!

If you fancy a crack at remixing one of our tracks send us an email to info@bombayduborchestra.com with NYC Remix as the subject with the track title you’d like to remix and include an example of your remix work. If you get into the next round we’ll email you a link to the stems/parts. We’ll feature the best ten online with our favourite making it onto the album

Just a quick mention of our forthcoming NYC remix project.

Over the next few months we'll be compiling a new remix release featuring remixes of both BDO albums by New York City based remixers, dj's and producers. Bombay Dub Orchestra head for Jamaica as part of BMI's songwriter camp

Garry Hughes and Andrew T. Mackay of the Bombay Dub Orchestra will be heading out to Kingston Jamiaca next week do take part in BMI's Kingston Songwriters Camp. They will be joining other BMI songwriters from around the world.

They will be recording at the famous Anchor Studios.

Anchor Studios began with the vision and talent of Augustus "Gussie" Clarke. Gussie launched his record producing career in 1972 at the age of 18 with U-Roy's "The Higher the Mountain". This track marked the beginning of Gussie's long term love affair with music and helped him establish himself as one of the top producers of all time that Jamaica had to offer; the track quickly moved to 'classic' status. He went on to produce Big Youth's classical Screaming Target album and I-Roy's Presenting I-Roy, both of which have been referred to as "among the best dee-jay albums ever produced". Over the years, Gussie continued to certify his status as super producer, working with the likes of Dennis Brown, The Mighty Diamonds, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo and Freddie McGregor.

In 1987 he opened his own Music Works Studios and being the visionary that he is, Gussie embraced the digital era of music production. This helped propel him into further success with hit productions such as Rumours by Gregory Issacs and J.C. Lodge's Telephone Love which was the biggest international reggae song in 1988. Gussie continued his career as a high profile producer through the 90's working with Shabba Ranks, Maxi Priest, Cocoa Tea and many others.

Andrew & Garry will also be working on the new Bombay Dub Orchestra album recording with some local greats. There will be updates throughout the recording on this blog with pictures and videos.

At three, Budhia Singh had already run six 13-mile half-marathons. Born into the slums of Bhubaneswar in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, Singh's mother sold him to a peddler for 800 rupees. Not long after Biranchi Das, a judo teacher who also runs an orphanage, bought him back, and soon discovers Budhia's talent for running.. But when Biranchi has the four year old Budhia run 42 miles, the debate begins: is he providing Budhia with a rare opportunity, or is he exploiting a boy too young to know what he really wants. When the government gets involved the case becomes a political football, and rumours of vast sums of money attract gangsters eager to drive a wedge between Biranchi and Budhia. The Body’s Hum, the Desert’s Joy: Footsteps in Africa Soundtrack: Nomadic Remix Brings Nomad Freedom to the Dancefloor and Water to the Sahara

There’s a sound you hear in the desert, a hum that can only be felt in the deepest silence. It is the high tone of vibrating nerves, the rush of blood in the veins. It’s the ultimate beat, the dance of the body itself.

This sound lies behind filmmaker, producer, and former VJ Kathi von Koerber’s three-part exploration of the life, worldview, and creativity of the nomadic Tuareg peoples of the Sahara. Envisioned from the start as a feature-length documentary film and soundtrack, Footsteps in Africa (KiahKeya Productions; 2009) reveals the vibrant cultural life of the world’s most forbidding climate and is coming to select festivals across North America and the world in 2010.

The sounds Von Koerber uncovered deep in the desert find new resonances on re-imagined tracks of Footsteps in Africa Soundtrack: Nomadic Remix (BFM Digital; April 22, 2010). Brought together by producer and conscious compiler Joshua Jacobs of Ambient Groove, DJs from across the planetary dance floor—from the ambient healing of Rara Avis to the worldly downtempo of the Kaya Project, from rising stars like DimmSummer to global remix icons like Cheb i Sabbah—explore the nature of the desert and its unexpectedly global nomadic denizens, with part of the profits going directly back to Tuareg communities.

“In the desert, there are no birds, no trees, just this denseness. You feel an amazing hertz frequency,” von Koerber explains. So she and soundtrack composer Jamshied Sharifi decided they needed to do something innovative. They invited throat singer Benno Klandt to vocalize over the entire film, a subtle sound only audible on a good sound system yet quietly uniting the soundtrack.

This sound, the hidden hum of the desert, was instantly picked up on by dubstepper Solar Lion. He added a sitar and brought the desert buzz front and center on his remix of the film’s “End Titles.” “You listen to this track and all of a sudden, you can hear it,” Von Koerber smiles; “the tone of the desert.”

DJs had unusually rich material to play with as they created their remixes. Von Koerber, in the process of filming and recording, went to festivals throughout the Tuareg region, events where nomads from Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and Niger met and made music together. There, tent jams go on for days on end and put events like Burning Man to shame.

“Westerners gather in mad chaos, but at festivals like the one in Goosi, where some of the tracks were recorded, it’s all about the community, singing together for hours,” von Koerber explains. ”The people who come out live in desert all the time. They hold family and tribal conferences. The music and the gatherings have the intention of promoting exchange and peace at meetings that can’t take place anywhere else.”

In addition to striking on-the-spot recordings, von Koerber enlisted some of the best popular performers from North Africa, such as Moroccan trance legend Hassan Hakmoun. Sharifi, a Persian-American composer with a strong jazz and classical background and an unfailing global ear, brought this varied vibrant soundscape together to support Von Koerber’s vivid images.

The eclectic international approach echoes the Tuaregs’ own distant roots, which stretch back through North African to Spain and Yemen to India, in a centuries-long journey resembling that of the Roma. “If you speak with Tuareg leaders and elders,” Von Koerber notes, “they’ll tell you they came from the east originally.”

Cheb i Sabbah embraces the entire geographic scope of their travels with his artful analog meets digital touch on “Hyena,” while New York global beat master Nickodemus weaves in elements from Asia to Brazil on his version of “Ahheahedon Tuareg Women’s Jam.” On “Open,” Bombay Dub Orchestra took Hakmoun’s gritty and compelling voice and emphasized its power by bringing in unexpected acoustic instruments like the djembe. “The DJs really felt what needed to happen and what was right for the desert,” von Koerber enthuses. “They took it to a whole new level.”

Von Koerber and her collaborators’ engagement with the stunning sights and sounds of the Sahara stretches into new territory, as well. She, along with groups like Reality Engine (“Tuareg Goosi Jam Audio-Visual Remix”), hope to transform Tuareg tracks into multi-platform creations people can experience live. “I’ve spent a decade creating installations and multi-media presentations,” explains von Koerber. “I’d like to bring that to dancers and listeners, the images and animation that emphasize the message of the music and the film.”

Water and music often intertwine in Tuareg proverbs and songs. As von Koerber puts it, “Water gives life to the body, as music gives life to the soul.” To honor this understanding, fifteen percent of all profits from the remix album will be returned to the community, to support clean water projects. “I wanted to bring the film back to them,” Von Koerber reflects. “It’s their voice, words and thoughts translated. The music and film are representations of them, and I wanted to give back.”

Instead of simply writing a check to charity, von Koerber is using her close ties to Tuareg community leaders to improve wells and purchase covers and new pumping systems as part of the Nomadic Villagers Clean Water Awareness Fund. This collaborative charitable initiative between KiahKeya Productions, the Indigenous Cultural Educational Center, and local Tuareg leaders featured in the film will make simple yet vital changes to improve daily life, yet not alter it radically from its traditional nomad roots.

Along with helping the bold and hardy people who captured her imagination years ago as she backpacked through her native Africa, von Koerber, herself a global trans-cultural nomad, feels the Tuareg have something valuable to give the world. “The Tuareg are nomads, and freedom is their music,” muses von Koerber. “The album awakens you to the nomad in every one of us. It brings you to that joy you feel in the desert, by getting you out on the dance floor. That joy is like water: we all need it.”

These clips are from the main song filmed in colour. It was the only part of the film in colour - the rest was filmed in Black and white - it's a very surreal moment when the film bursts into colour!

BDO's Garry Hughes Spills The Beans on his Home Town of Monmouth

Garry's report and words from Monmouth, Wales during the current big freeze in the UK

These are some pictures taken over the last couple of days in Monmouth where I live. It's currently minus five degrees here which is the coldest it's been since 1981. Everything has pretty much come to a standstill. Monmouth is a market town on the Welsh borders and traditional county town of Monmouthshire. It is situated where the River Monnow meets the River Wye with bridges over both. It's about 40 miles away from Bristol, home of Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky and a whole vibrant music and film production scene. There's a lively club scene too. Andrew and I checked out Dreadzone at the Thekla, which is a club on a boat, last time he was here.

I've also got two amazing recording studios on my doorstop. Rockfie ld studios was the first residential studio in the UK and has been the recording venue of choice for bands from Queen to Oasis. Their website isn't fantastic but there are some nice pictures of the studio and a list of the incredible records that have been made there.The drums and some of the percussion for 3 cities were recorded at Rockfield with Will Brown on drums and Sirishkumar and Abdullha Mufa on percussion.

We also recorded all the piano (played by Andrew on the very same Bosendorfer grand that Freddie Mercury played on 'Bohemian Rhapsody') over a the course of a very late night session.

My other local studio is Monnow Valley.

This is another wonderfully vibey place. We recorded the cello solo on "Mumtaz" from the first album here.

The medieval 13th century fortified stone bridge at Monnow Bridge is the only one of it's design remaining This is the bridge in the night shots.

The pub in the night shot is the Punch house on the town square. When I took these photos on Tuesday night there was one person inside. They were closed by 9.30!

The slow exposure shot is of the street I live in from the church yard.

The daytime picture is the view from my bedroom window looking up the Wye valley. The hill on the left is called the Kymin. It's a steep walk to the top but the view when you get there is amazing. The other two day time shots are taken from my front doorstep. St Mary's church, which is right opposite the house, is currently having it's spire repaired.

Live performers have included Yo-Yo Ma, Pat Metheny, Loreena McKennitt, Steve Roach, and many others. Echoes has produced thirteen CD collections from these and other in-studio performances. Distributed by Public Radio International, Echoes is currently heard on over 130 radio stations from Maine to the Marianas Islands. Echoes can also be heard on the web, with 24/7 streaming and on-demand audio available.

Echoes was created in 1989 by Kimberly Haas and John Diliberto, a music journalist whose works have appeared in Billboard, Pulse, Jazziz, Down Beat, Musician, and Amazon.com. He has also produced Peabody Award-winning documentaries for National Public Radio's Jazz Profiles. Haas and Diliberto had previously produced the award-winning documentary series Totally Wired (1982-1989), which won Columbia University's Major Armstrong Award, the Ohio State Award, and the National Federation of Community Broadcaster's Award.

#12 On Bobby Friction's Top 30 of 2009

Another fine DJ who has showed us a lot of support over the years is the BBC's Bobby Friction. He has just announced his Top 30 of 2009 and he has put Bombay Dub Orchestra's 'Journey' at number 12. Ever since '3 Cities In dub' came out late last year he has been spinning the rather excellent Liquid Stranger Slip Trip remix of 'Journey'. It's a Dub step fest which has gone down really well in clubs and on radio across the globe.

'Strange Constellations' in Pathaan's best of 2009

We have had some great support from fans and radio alike and in particular our dear friend Pathaan who has a great show - PATHAAN'S MUSICAL RICKSHAW - that's been going now for three years (I think). He even uses a sample from 'Mumtaz' from our first album as his title music!

Pathaan has also been remixed two tracks for us since our debut album - 'To The Shore' - from our Bombay Dub Orchestra Remixed album and also his epic remix of 'Journey' from '3 Cities in Dub'.

Here's a track that came out in the UK last year and is now getting a release in India. Strings arranged by Andrew of BDO last year at Empire Audio in Mumbai performed by our loyal string orchestra.

Ok guys its a long way off - well probably not that far and we are onto the next album and looking for an album title. We did ask for your thoughts on collaborations and we had some amazing ones in. Many were our own thoughts as well. Lets hope we can achieve some of those.

In the meantime lets have a little think about potential album titles!!

So we are back in. Looks like we might be writing and recording what Garry referred to as the last track on the album. Chilled, ambient and laid well back. The Wurlitzer (c late 60's) through the Eventide Harmonizer H 3000 SE with mod factory presets! Won't tell the preset though! Added a bit of Rhodes! Hmmmm. Nice. We'll fire up the VCS3 later!

Working on the new Bombay Dub Orchestra album is always a great and exciting time. New ideas sometimes are hard to come by but being back in the studio together is very cool indeed. Firing up the rhodes, wurlitzer, prophet 5, CS 80- etc is great. We will be using plug-in instruments here and there but to have the real thing is too good! Thanks to Garry collecting some great instruments over the years!
